This is basically the starting point when designing a lightning protection system, attempting to make the unpredictable, predictable.

Whilst no Lightning Protection or Earthing system can be a hundred percent effective, a carefully and correctly designed, installed and well maintained system can dramatically reduce the risk of damage and destruction to property, equipment and most importantly safeguarding human life.  An incorrectly designed and installed system can more often than not pose a greater risk than no system at all and the notion that one size fits all often leads to more damage than good.
